Tencent Holdings has introduced its latest artificial intelligence model, Hunyuan Turbo S, claiming it surpasses the performance of DeepSeek’s R1 model. The company asserts that Turbo S can provide responses in under a second, effectively eliminating the delays observed in competitors like DeepSeek R1 and Tencent’s previous Hunyuan T1 model. Additionally, Turbo S is reported to match DeepSeek-V3 in areas such as knowledge, mathematics, and reasoning, while operating at a significantly reduced cost.
This development comes as Chinese tech giants, including Tencent, Alibaba, and ByteDance, have significantly increased their orders for Nvidia’s H20 AI chips. The surge in demand is largely attributed to the growing adoption of DeepSeek’s cost-effective AI models, which prioritize inference efficiency over raw processing power. Despite potential U.S. restrictions on the sale of H20 chips to China, orders continue to rise, underscoring Nvidia’s market dominance and the escalating AI race between China and the U.S.
In a strategic shift, Tencent has also announced plans to integrate AI-powered search capabilities from DeepSeek into its widely used messaging app, Weixin (WeChat). This move indicates a departure from relying solely on proprietary AI models, reflecting Tencent’s commitment to leveraging external partnerships to enhance user experience and maintain its competitive edge in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
